नितळ (Nital)

Directors' Note: 'Nital means transparent.....Crystal clear....
Nital, which literally means transparent, so clear…that one can see the base. It is a portrait of inner beauty, the inner self, which is hidden beneath the obviously visible outer coat-skin.
It touches the crux of the issue of self image and acceptance, thus the need to redefine our arena of ‘vision’, where different senses of body emboss different perceptions of beauty.
The story reflects undercurrents of contradictions and confusions of so called sophisticated, civilised and elite people, who are directed by social stereotypes, while those who are closer to nature have much more acceptance for people as ‘humans’.'
This is story of Dr. Neeraja, a young and intelligent opthalmologist, who has vitiligo (white patches on her skin, face especially). Though medically vitiligo is just the lack of a skin pigment, it affects the entire identity of a person. The story unwinds itself, portraying societal insensitivity and cowardice. On the other hand, it illustrates rationality emerging in younger generation about vitiligo.
An interesting thing about this movie is that, there are lot many characters as joint family members coming from diverse professional, social, 'cultural' backgrounds and age. Inspite of this everyone of them has very clear, precise and appropriate thought process which is put together very well in movie. Most of the actors are from theatre, so acting is obviously very good. Music is also very good. Actually simplicity is the base of this movie, it can be seen in music, production design, cinematography, dialogues, costumes and still everything looks so apt and beautiful!
I feel the time I spent watching this movie and compiling this review is quite worth! :)
Most of the information and pictures here are from the official website of Nital, and the movie is also available with subtitles.

The content of Marathi films is powerful now a days! because of tight budgets, they make sure the film is worth the money spent for the producers as well as for the audience! I prefer watching these simple marathi films to the out of proportion hindi films that have no content , just glamor!

Thanx for putting up the review, though in this part of India ( Blore) its difficult to get a hold on marathi films, yet....i'll definately add this 1 to the list of must watch films!

Hi bhavin,
There are few Marathi films I wanted you to see are : Goshta Choti Dongraevadhi, Gabhricha Paus both are based on the Life of Farmers in India and the suicide happened in between. Another outstanding movie which i liked the MOST and you MUST watch is Mukta.... Jabbar Patel's movie. The movie talk about the Dalit and discrimination by politicians/ upper class people. And the songs are toooooooo good ... its on my Orkut videos also, so hope to see your review very soon on these movies :)

i guess it was synchronicity at work that got me to see this movie.

i want to thank u pratima, for making me watch it, and to you bhavin and kiran for passing it on to her.

some scenes are really beautiful and i often keep replaying them.

one line that really stayed with me was 'saunskruti ne streela saundarachya kalpanecha turungat je adkavle tyatun tu bahr padlis, bas ek kushal manus ho, aani mala teh honyachi iccha ahe.'

i have vitiligo since 7-8 years now,and i never thought abt it much. but i am only now beginning to accept it to be a part of me.

and now after years of wearing full sleeved tops, i have had the courage to stop covering up,this movie may have triggered it in some way.
